I am having this same problem. We'd really like to migrate away from our Ghost solution, but right now that seems to be the only thing that works. I stumbled across the WINNER project and followed along, but when I go to create the DVD image (using XP SP3 as a base) it tries to apply SP2 and then errors out. Is there a way we can tell it not to apply SP2 ?
Sadly, the best I can offer is to try the project Unattended. It is better kept up to date as this project was put on the back burner so work could be done on PING.
Well that really is sad. Unfortunately unattended doesn't seem to be a decent solution either, at least from being a Windows-only solution. It has instructions for PXE booting, which is my ultimate goal, but it's referring to files that aren't there. Maybe I will just use RIS :/
I had trouble setting up unattended as well. Took me some time to figure it all out, but it will work on PXE. More trial and error than anything. Found it easier to make a host on my network called "ntinstall" (as that is the default server) and a share called "install" (also the default) that contains the dosbin and other folders.
Still no solution to this problem? Isn't there anyway to make DVD Gen to NOT download updates/service packs, and just use the i386 provided as install source?
